Color and Light: Chip Simons

I am a dog by Chip Simons

    I chose to write about Chip Simons, the photographer who knows his style - vivid colors, wide-angle lenses, and unique lighting skills. He was born in Ohio in 1958, and he started photography at the age of seven. His skill got into it during high school in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and pursued art of photography at Kutztown University and the University of New Mexico later.

    Simon's work is often characterized by his humor and surrealism, featuring animals, interesting camera angles, and lighting. One of his representative works is "I am a dog" as you can see at the top. You can see all the photos from this link (I am a dog link). The colors and the extraordinary camera angle express the dog's goofiness and personality, and even let viewers explore the different characteristics of each dog. This series spread his name all over the world when Andy Warhol's interview magazine. 

    Another example of Simons' work is "Light Painting", characterized by the painting lines. He created the line with long exposure and put a light source like he was painting onto the subject while the exposure was turned on. I can see he was using multiple light sources in the picture on the right. I assume there were at least five, the first was for a blue background, the second was on the desk, the third and fourth were for something in the center, and the last one was for the white light drawing in the back. He didn't put any light on the person so it creates a kind of mysterious mood. 


   In addition, He has some digital art like this, which is more my specialty compared to his other works. I have done similar artwork like this with 3D graphics and digital photos for my capstone. For the Color and Light project, I can try something like this with a 3D graphic if Andreas allows me to.

Inspiration for portrait project: Alec Soth

       Alec Soth is an American photographer known for his large-scale projects that explore themes of American life, isolation, and the passage of time. Born in 1969 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Soth gained international recognition with his 2004 photobook Sleeping by the Mississippi, which features poetic and melancholic images of people and landscapes along the Mississippi River.      His photo often focuses on the subject’s feelings such as loneliness, depression, and their complicated experience in the United States. Also, he drives around the USA to look for his inspiration. Many of the objects in his photographs don’t seem as interesting as the other photographs taken.
